The University of Georgia Bulldogs football program is steeped in tradition and excellence. Established in 1892, the Bulldogs have a storied history in the sport of American football. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

A Legacy of Championships

The Bulldogs have achieved great success over the years, claiming four consensus national championships in 1942, 1980, 2021, and 2022. They have also been named national champions by at least one polling authority in four other seasons. With a total of 16 conference championships and appearances in 61 bowl games, the Bulldogs have established themselves as one of the most successful programs in college football.

Traditions and Rivalries

The Bulldogs are known for their passionate fan base, known as the "Bulldog Nation," and their unique traditions. The team plays its home games at the historic Sanford Stadium, famously known as "Between the Hedges." The stadium's iconic privet hedges have been a symbol of the Bulldogs' dominance on their home turf.

One of the most beloved traditions is the presence of Uga, the school's white bulldog mascot. Uga has been a beloved figure since 1956 and is buried in a mausoleum near the stadium entrance.

The Bulldogs have several heated rivalries that add excitement and intensity to their schedule. The annual matchups against Auburn, Florida, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina are highly anticipated by fans and players alike. The "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" between Georgia and Auburn dates back to 1892 and continues to be a highly competitive and closely contested game.

Legacy of Great Players

The Bulldogs have produced many notable players throughout their history. Standouts like Herschel Walker, Fran Tarkenton, and Charley Trippi have left an indelible mark on the program. Georgia has also seen several players go on to achieve great success at the professional level, with five former Bulldogs being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With a rich history, passionate fans, and a commitment to excellence, the Georgia Bulldogs football program continues to be a force to be reckoned with in college football. Whether it's their championship pedigree, fierce rivalries, or iconic traditions, the Bulldogs consistently captivate audiences and remain a perennial contender in the world of college football.
