Are you an avid outdoors enthusiast seeking a backpack that can handle heavy loads and long trips? Look no further than the Osprey Aether Plus 70. This upgraded version of the popular Aether line offers enhanced storage options and a convertible top lid that doubles as a daypack. I recently had the chance to test this backpack in southern Patagonia, and I was highly impressed by its adjustability, comfort, and thoughtful design.

Carrying Comfort

The Osprey Aether Plus 70 is built on the foundation of the signature Aether heavy hauler. It excels at distributing weight and provides exceptional comfort, even when carrying heavy loads over long distances. The wide hipbelt and well-cushioned shoulder straps ensure a snug fit and excellent support. The frame effectively distributes the load, even on challenging terrain like off-camber trails, boulder fields, scree slopes, and river crossings. The Aether Plus offers a customizable fit system called "Fit-on-the-Fly," allowing you to adjust the padding to your preference for maximum support and comfort. With ample compression straps, you can secure your gear and minimize swaying.

Weight

Weighing in at 6 pounds, 2.7 ounces, the Osprey Aether Plus 70 is undeniably heavy. However, this weight comes with several advantages. The generous storage space, easy access to the main compartment, and the inclusion of a functional daypack make it worth the extra weight. For those looking to shave off some weight, you have the option to remove the lid/daypack (around 11.5 ounces) and sleeping pad straps (1 ounce). While it may not be the lightest backpack on the market, the Aether Plus makes up for it with its storage capacity and durable build.

Organization

The Aether Plus 70 excels in terms of organization and accessibility. The U-shaped zipper at the front provides convenient access to the main compartment, allowing you to quickly retrieve your gear without rummaging through layers of items. Additionally, there is a sleeping bag compartment at the bottom of the pack with a removable divider, which can be accessed through a zippered opening. The pack offers a generous number of pockets, including lid pockets for small items, a large "shove-it" pocket for versatile storage, and long, narrow pockets on the sides for thin and low-profile items. With nine pockets in total (including the daypack and rain cover compartments), you'll have no shortage of storage options.

Ventilation

The Aether Plus 70 features Osprey's AirScape backpanel, which offers decent breathability. While it may not match the exceptional ventilation of Osprey's AntiGravity design found on packs like the Atmos and Aura, the AirScape backpanel provides a comfortable airflow. The backpanel has foam with cut-outs and suspended mesh for improved airflow in the upper portion, while the lower back and hipbelt feature less suspended mesh. This design strikes a balance between breathability and support. If you tend to run warm, you may consider upgrading to a more breathable design like the Atmos AG.

Weather Protection

When it comes to weather protection, the Aether Plus 70 does not disappoint. The pack comes with a rain cover that effectively keeps your gear dry during wet conditions. Additionally, the body, accent fabrics, and base of the pack feature durable water repellent (DWR) coatings, ensuring resistance to light moisture. Even in the rain-soaked environment of Patagonia, all my gear remained perfectly dry inside the pack. While some competitors offer water-resistant zippers for added protection, the Aether Plus' performance in adverse conditions is commendable.

Build Quality and Durability

Osprey is renowned for its high-quality backpacks, and the Aether Plus 70 lives up to their reputation. Made with 210-denier (D) nylon, the pack's body and bottom are highly resistant to tears and abrasion. Throughout my testing, there were no signs of wear or damage, despite subjecting the pack to rough conditions. The zippers, straps, clips, and stitching all remain intact and fully functional. While I did encounter a small tear in the front shove-it pocket, it was entirely avoidable and not indicative of the pack's overall durability. Overall, the Aether Plus is a well-built and reliable pack that can withstand the demands of rugged outdoor adventures.

Fit and Sizing

The Osprey Aether Plus 70 is available in two sizes: S/M and L/XL. The highly adjustable nature of the pack ensures a customizable fit. The "Fit-on-the-Fly" system allows you to adjust the hipbelt and shoulder strap padding to your comfort preferences. The torso length can be lengthened or shortened by moving the harness and pulling the tabs above the hipbelt. The waist belt has plenty of room to accommodate a range of body types. The sternum strap can also be adjusted for optimal positioning. With its extensive adjustability, the Aether Plus offers a snug and confidence-inspiring fit.

Sustainability

Osprey has made significant strides in sustainability, and the Aether Plus 70 reflects this commitment. The pack's body, accents, and bottom are made with bluesign-approved nylon, ensuring the use of safe chemicals for consumers, workers, and the environment. The DWR coatings applied to the pack are also PFC-free, avoiding the use of perfluorocarbons, which are known as "forever chemicals." While the pack doesn't currently incorporate recycled fabrics, it is thoughtfully made and environmentally conscious.

Conclusion

The Osprey Aether Plus 70 is a highly capable and comfortable backpack for serious backpackers. Its adjustability, storage capacity, and durable build make it an excellent choice for long and gear-intensive trips. While it may be heavier than some competitors, the Aether Plus offers unparalleled carrying comfort and organization. The inclusion of a convertible daypack and effective weather protection further enhance its versatility. With Osprey's commitment to sustainability, you can feel good about choosing the Aether Plus 70 for your outdoor adventures.
