When it comes to large backpacks, some may dismiss them as outdated relics of the past. And while Osprey's Archeon series may sport a clean and utilitarian look, these packs are anything but outdated. I had the opportunity to test out the men's Archeon 70 and the women's Archeon 65 on several trips this summer, and I must say, they exceeded my expectations.

Comfort and Functionality

One of the standout features of the Archeon packs is their exceptional comfort. With a suspension system that includes an HDPE framesheet and aluminum alloy stays, these packs can comfortably carry loads of up to 45 pounds. The adjustable harness ensures a seamless fit, eliminating discomfort and fatigue commonly experienced with other packs. Whether I was navigating rocky scrambles or trekking for miles, the Archeon packs provided the support I needed.

Breathability and Durability

Osprey didn't skimp on breathability when designing the Archeon packs. The edgeless, breathable foam padding in the hipbelt and shoulder straps, along with the Airscape back panel, ensure proper ventilation while on the move. Of course, even with excellent ventilation, sweat is inevitable when carrying a heavy load. But the comfort and performance of these packs make the extra weight worth it.

Durability is another area where the Archeon packs shine. Made with 100 percent recycled, 1880-denier nylon canvas fabric, these packs can withstand the harshest of conditions. From off-trail bushwhacking to scraping through slot canyons, these packs are built to last. The metal hook-style clips provide added durability and replace traditional buckles.

Access and Storage

The Archeon packs offer excellent access and storage options. With a top-loading design and a floating lid, accessing the main compartment is a breeze. The dual-zipper front panel allows for quick access to essential items, and the sleeping bag compartment features a floating divider. The packs also include multiple pockets, including two stretch side pockets, a spacious lid pocket, and zippered hipbelt pockets. Side compression straps and webbing lash points provide convenient options for securing additional gear.

Weight and Versatility

With weights ranging from 5.5 to just over six pounds (depending on size), the Archeon 70 and 65 may not be the lightest packs on the market. However, they are specifically designed for backpackers who carry heavy loads. For trips that require extra gear and equipment, such as backpacking with young children or gear-intensive adventures, the Archeon packs are an excellent choice.

The Verdict

The Osprey Archeon 70 and Archeon 65 Backpacks are not for those looking to travel light. But if you're in need of superior comfort, durability, and access for your gear-intensive adventures, these packs are worth considering. Osprey's attention to detail and craftsmanship are evident in every aspect of these packs, making them a reliable choice for any backpacking excursion.
