The Lego Ninjago Movie, the third installment in the Lego Movie franchise, delivers on its promise of providing entertaining cartoon-driven fun. While it may not have the same depth as its predecessors, it still manages to captivate its target audience. As a standalone film, it succeeds in bringing humor and puns to the screen. However, for those who have followed the franchise closely, it may leave them wanting more.

The previous Lego movies went beyond mere entertainment, incorporating clever storytelling and satirical elements. The original Lego Movie celebrated the boundless creativity of children, while The Lego Batman Movie humorously parodied superhero films. In comparison, The Lego Ninjago Movie lacks the same level of inventiveness and originality.

Although it's slightly disheartening to witness the franchise's shift towards a more conventional Saturday morning cartoon style, the film still manages to provide enough wry humor to elevate it above the average kids' movie. The audience, particularly younger viewers and those familiar with the Ninjago theme, will find enjoyment in its jokes and action-packed sequences.

For those unfamiliar with the Ninjago universe, the movie does little to provide context. However, fear not! Ninjago is a fictional world created as a Lego theme and a setting for the popular show, Ninjago: Master of Spin. It revolves around the conflict between Lord Garmadon and Sensei Wu, two sons of the First Spinjitzu Master. The movie introduces six ninjas who possess powerful elemental weapons and must protect Ninjago from Lord Garmadon's schemes.

The Lego Ninjago Movie successfully combines martial arts, humor, monsters, and adventure, making it a suitable choice for Lego fans. However, it does succumb to heavy product placement, which is to be expected given its close ties to the toy sets and related merchandise. While the franchise has always embraced product placement, this movie relies more on references and jokes rather than cleverly satirizing the world of film itself.

As a result, one might question the future direction of the Lego Movie franchise. Will it become more commercialized, aligning itself with other consumer-driven animated films? The Lego movies have consistently stood out as imaginative and refreshing compared to the offerings of Angry Birds, Trolls, or the Emoji Movie. Let us hope that the franchise stays true to its roots and continues to inspire the creativity and imagination of its audience.

The Lego Ninjago Movie opens in US theaters on September 22. So, gather your young Lego enthusiasts and embark on an action-packed adventure filled with humor and ninjas!
