Bali, located 8° south of the equator, experiences a warm tropical climate year-round. While it doesn't have the typical changing seasons, it has a distinction between the rainy season and the dry season. These seasons are also known as the busy tourism season and the even busier tourism season.

Now, let's dive into the pros and cons of visiting Bali during each season to determine the best time for you!

When is the Best Time to Visit Bali?

If you want the best chance of comfortable weather, the peak of the dry season, from June to August, is the ideal time to visit Bali. However, it's recommended to avoid visiting during the December holidays, as it's not only the peak of the rainy season but also a period of heavy crowds.

Our personal recommendation would be to visit Bali during the shoulder months of May, June, or September to avoid both the rain and the crowds. These months offer a great balance of weather and fewer tourists.

Keep in mind that there is no definitive answer as Bali is a great destination all year round. Each season has its own unique draws and drawbacks. To help you decide, ask yourself a few questions:

  • Do you mind a bit of rain?
  • Are you easily bothered by crowds?
  • Are you negatively affected by high humidity?
  • Do you prefer outdoor activities like hiking and cycling?
  • Are you interested in water sports like scuba diving or surfing?

Answering these questions will give you a starting point to determine when to visit Bali.

Our Experience in Bali

We've visited Bali for extended periods in different seasons, including spring, summer, and fall. Here's a glimpse of our experiences during each season:

  • Spring: We experienced a bit of rain and humidity during March and April, but it was still enjoyable. Neyepi, the Balinese day of silence, was a unique experience.
  • Summer: The weather was dry and warm, perfect for outdoor activities like scuba diving and exploring. The popular areas were crowded, but the stunning weather made up for it.
  • Fall: We had a great time in October with clear skies, beach temperatures, and fewer crowds. While we left for New Zealand in mid-November, we didn't experience the rainy season.

Bali Geography Overview

Bali is a small island located between the Indian and Pacific oceans in Southeast Asia. It's known for its volcanic peaks and lush greenery. The island's fertility is a result of its volcanic nature and the mountain peaks that bring rain.

Bali's daylight hours are consistent year-round, with sunrise around 6 a.m. and sunset around 6:30 p.m. This consistency allows you to plan your activities accordingly.

Bali experiences two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year, ranging from mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (mid-20s to mid-30s Celsius).

Dry Season in Bali

The dry season in Bali is tempting for those looking to escape the winter months in the southern hemisphere. It offers little rain and lower humidity, making it a crowded period to visit, particularly from June to August.

Here's an overview of the dry season months:

  • April: The warmest month with "shoulder season" traffic.
  • May: Moving into the "shoulder season" with decreasing humidity.
  • June: The first month of winter and the edge of the peak tourism season.
  • July: Peak tourism season, with high accommodation prices and crowds.
  • August: Coolest temperatures and peak tourism.
  • September: Transition to the "shoulder season" with slightly fewer crowds.
  • October: Rising temperatures and thinner crowds.

Rainy Season in Bali

During the rainy season, the weather in Bali becomes more unpredictable. Rain showers can last for days or dissipate quickly. It's also the hottest time of the year, accompanied by high humidity. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, so come prepared!

Despite being technically the "low season" for tourism, Bali still attracts tourists throughout the year. However, the rainy season offers a respite from the crowds. Remember that even during this season, you're likely to experience sunny periods between showers.

The rainy season months are as follows:

  • November: Rough sea conditions, but fewer crowds.
  • December: Crowded during the Christmas/New Year holidays.
  • January: Least crowded month with the most rainfall.
  • February: Between low and "shoulder season" with slightly less tourism.
  • March: Crowds start building, and Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, falls in March.
